Derived from the pencil drawing in the 'North of England' sketchbook (No.23). Like T.B.I-C, this study is built up in layers of delicate washes - cream, pink and pale blue underneath darker local colour. Much use is made of wiping-out lights. The experimental process of applying watercolour in thin glazes is characteristic of Turner's technical preoccupations during the closing years of the century, and reflects the new attitudes to picture construction, tonality and lighting which he was acquiring from his work in oil from 1796 onwards.
