This is one of the unfinished oil paintings in which Turner approaches closest to his late watercolour style. It appears to be an independent composition, unrelated to any other work, though in many respects it is similar to the oils derived from the Liber Studiorum subjects, particularly to 'Norham Castle' (No.650).
