Rawlinson No.468. One of the loveliest of the Seine series illustrating Turner's Annual Tour, 1834. The drawing was owned by Ruskin; its subject derives from pencil sketches of Rouen from St Catherine's Hill in the 'Rouen' sketchbook, T.B.CCLV, which, as Finberg points out (1909 I I I, p.776) shows the cathedral with no central spire, and was therefore presumably used between 1822 and 1827 (perhaps on Turner's visit of 1826). The sketch on f.8v is closest to Turner's final composition, though several other studies were also probably referred to. See also the 'Dieppe, Rouen and Paris' sketchbook (No.363), f.30r.
